Our auction house has been established for just shy of 50 years in Merseyside, Southport, next to our head office.

We have one auction per month, specialising in antiques, jewellery, furniture and general lots. With 99% of our items submitted from private sources.

Our sales are usually held on a Thursday morning with viewings taking place Tuesday and Wednesday 9am – 5pm. Sale day we open at 9am.

Although it is usually very busy there is always a very friendly atmosphere.

If you have an item that you would like to have valued, we would be delighted to give you an initial idea of an auction estimate. This is a complimentary service, just ring our Southport office and ask for Ellen.

Due to the high volume of requests we receive please allow 2-4 weeks for our specialists to perform additional research and assign auction estimates.


Our standard seller’s commission is 20% on the hammer price of each lot.

We need to have your property on our premises far enough in advance of the sale to catalogue and promote it properly – usually at least 2 weeks prior to the sale date. We are happy to assist with transportation arrangements; we have a list of highly recommended companies we can direct you to.

If one or two of your lots remain unsold after an auction we will be in touch with what to do next.  The specialist in charge of the sale may suggest that either your lot is re-offered again in a future auction or collected by yourself. If we do not hear from you we may proceed with our recommendation. Ellis & Sons do not charge for unsold lots.

Payment will be sent 28 working days after the auction for all lots sold. It is at this stage that we deduct our fees and charges. Payments are normally made by cheque.

Our aim is to make buying at auction as easy and enjoyable as possible.

We highly recommend that potential bidders gather as much information as possible regarding a lot before placing a bid.

All purchases are subject to a buyer’s premium of 20% + VAT. When you successfully bid on any lot, the price you pay will be the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium.

The premium is subject to VAT at the standard rate

If you would like to bid by telephone, our clerk will call you from the saleroom on the auction day, just before your lot(s) come up, and will then relay to you the events in the room, and bid on your behalf live at the auction when instructed to do so.
